Scott City shuts out Colby
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City and Colby battled for the final playoff spot in Class 3A, District 8 on Friday night at Dennen Field, as both teams entered 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in district play. A long touchdown pass from Scott City in the second quarter would be all that the Beavers needed all night, as they put together three straight touchdown drives in the second half on their way to a 27-0 win over the Eeagles.
Both teams would put together long sustained drives in the first quarter and both teams would come up short on fourth down in the red zone. Scott City’s drive ended at the Eagle six, and Colby’s ended at the Beaver 12 after a drive that took up over seven-and-a-half minutes.
The Beavers got the ball early in the second quarter, and on the second play of the drive, quarterback Gradin Edwards connected on a deep flag pattern to Adrian Garcia, and Garcia would side step a player, and keep his balance inbounds and score from 84 yards out with 11:10 left in the first half to lead 6-0 after the missed PAT.
That would be the score at the break, as both teams were unable to come up with a sustained drive.
After forcing the Eagles to a three-and-out to open the second half, Scott City went to work on the ground, taking advantage of short field. A 42-yard drive was capped off with a 12-yard touchdown run by Edwards to double the score to 12-0, and the Beavers would convert an Edwards pass to Adan Tarango to push the lead to 14-0.
The Scott City defense forced a turnover on downs late in the third quarter at midfield and score on the second play of the fourth quarter. Easton Eisenhour plunged in from three yards out with 11:45 left to extend the lead to 21-0 with the Pablo Solis PAT. After a quick three-and-out by Colby, a 56-yard drive was capped off by a Reid Felker one-yard run wiht 8:14 left to push the lead to 27-0. The Eagles would turn the ball over on downs on an interception, as the teams traded possessions over the final eight minutes, as Scott City picked up the win 27-0.
Gradin Edwards filled in for Drew Metzger, who was not suited up due to an injury from the previous week, threw for 205 yards on 8-19 passing with a touchdown.
