Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation Launches Public Archive to Preserve State’s Ultrarunning History

Posted November 1, 2026

WICHITA, Kansas–The Kansas Ultrarunning Historical Foundation has launched a connected online archive to preserve the history of ultrarunning in Kansas, bringing race results, runner histories, photographs, documents and firsthand accounts into a searchable public record.

The federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit invites runners, race directors, volunteers, clubs, families and others with historical materials to help document the sport’s development across the state.

The Foundation’s mission is to preserve, document and make publicly accessible the history of ultrarunning in Kansas for current and future generations. Its work connects the statistical record with the people, organizations and communities that helped create it.

The archive brings together three websites: KansasUltrarunningHistory.org, the central home for historical accounts, organizations, a timeline and archival media; KansasUltrarunners.com, which connects runners with their documented performances; and KansasUltraRaces.com, which organizes races, editions, results and event histories.

Visitors can move between individual runners and the races in which they participated, while exploring the broader history surrounding those performances. Published methodology and verification standards explain how the foundation evaluates sources, documents results and addresses corrections.

Kansas ultrarunning history has survived in many places: magazine pages, race programs, club newsletters, timing records, newspaper coverage, personal collections and the memories of participants. Bringing those sources together helps preserve connections that can be difficult to reconstruct when records remain scattered or disappear.

The foundation’s scope extends beyond finish times and competitive achievements. Photographs, correspondence, course maps and recollections can help explain how a race began, how an organization developed, or how volunteers and local communities sustained an event over decades.

Members of the public are encouraged to consider what may be in their own collections. An old results sheet, a saved newsletter, a photograph or a firsthand account may help fill a gap in the historical record. Contributors do not need to be professional historians or researchers.

The website’s Submissions & Corrections section accepts missing results and documented corrections; histories of races, organizations and individuals; stories, photographs and other historical media; and expressions of interest from research and archival volunteers.

Contributors are asked to provide supporting sources and explain what they know about the material, including its origin when possible. Incomplete historical context does not automatically make an item unusable, but unknown details should be identified rather than guessed. Firsthand recollections are welcome and are distinguished from verified performance records.

The foundation has built legacy and succession planning into its operations so the archive can continue beyond its founding leadership. That work includes documenting research methods and technical systems, planning for the secure transfer of administrative access, and developing legal and funding arrangements for continued hosting, maintenance and archival stewardship. The purpose is to give future stewards the authority, access, resources and documentation needed to preserve, correct and expand the historical record.
