KDOT gives update on road work south of Garden City

Posted November 3, 2026

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, there’s a lot of dirt moving on U.S. Highway 83 south of Garden City. Crews are doing earthwork for the new roadway alignment, building it up so it’s ready for paving later.

This project covers about 12.7 miles of U.S. 83, from about 2.5 miles north of the Haskell-Finney county line to the bridge over the Arkansas River. When it’s done, this section of U.S. 83 will be a Super 2 highway with side-by-side passing lanes.

While crews are working, KDOT reminds travelers to watch for trucks and heavy equipment entering and leaving the highway, slow down and follow posted work zone speed limits, and give yourself extra time,

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of October 2027, weather permitting.
