Strohmeyer, Damian

Damian Strohmeyer has been telling stories with photographs for more than four decades. Although sports photography has been a main staple of Damian’s career, he is also adept in portraiture, photojournalism, and feature photography in the advertising, commercial and editorial markets.

Damian has been affiliated with Sports Illustrated magazine for over 30 years, many years of those years as a staff photographer. Among the major sports events you might spot Damian are: The World Series, The NCAA Basketball Tournament, The World Cup, The Stanley Cup, The Olympics, and over 30 Super Bowls. His work has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated over 70 times.

Damian began his career in Kansas, at the Topeka Capital Journal, then moved on to the Denver Post before he began working for Sports Illustrated.

Honored in many photo contests, Damian has received awards from Pictures of the Year, Missouri University’s POYi, The National Headliners Awards, and The Pro Football Hall of Fame. His work is exhibited at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio. He received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Boston Press Photographers Association in 2025.

Damian has been inducted into the exclusive Canon Legends of Light program, which Canon extols as a group of industry legends who share their knowledge and expertise with photographers through workshops, seminars, and published articles.

A March for Honor, a book chronicling small town Indiana High School basketball, was photographed by Damian and written by Sports Illustrated Senior writer Alexander Wolff.

Damian grew up in Axtell, Kansas and graduated from Washburn University in Topeka KS. He is married to Joanne Rathe a former Chief Photographer at The Boston Globe. They have three adult children, Jessye, Zach, and Leah and three adorable grandchildren.

Joanne and Damian moved recently to Atlanta from Boston to be closer to family and their three grandchildren.
