School officials sent an email to parents of USD 373 students Feb. 19 alerting them to a possible walk out by students on Feb. 23.
“Administration is aware of a potential student-led walkout planned for Monday, February 23rd at 9:30 a.m. at Newton High School and Chisholm Middle School,” the email read.
The motivation of the walk out was not listed.
According to the email, students participating in a walkout are considered to be absent and unexcused.
“This communication allows families to have a proactive conversation at home in regards to how you and your child approach a potential walkout. We encourage you to have a conversation with your children as to your preferences regarding this matter,” the email read.
The most recent large-scale walkout from Newton High School occurred in 2018.
March 14, 2018, around 200 students walked out of class, and school, at Newton High School to demand action on gun violence and school safety. A Facebook post said students would not be punished for participating, even as social media posts from teachers suggested alternate means and different actions.
Most students did not leave campus, returning to class after a rally on the sidewalk at the main entrance of the school.
