Holcomb boys, Garden City girls win team titles at Mike Smith Invitational

Garden City, Kan.–(westernkansasnews.com)–It was a cold Tuesday afternoon and evening for a track meet, as the annual Mike Smith Invitational took place among nine schools from the GWAC and WAC at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City.

Holcomb would take the boys title, edging Dodge City by less than four points, while Garden City was third. The Garden City girls would dominate the field, winning by 54 points over runner-up Dodge City, and Liberal took third.

The boys saw some impressive results, highighted by the top 800M Run in the state by Holcomb’s Brody Deniston, running in a time of 1:53.02. Scott City’s Michael Hermosillo won the 1600 and 3200-Meter Runs, and Holcomb’s Cooper Cranston was a winner in the 110M High Hurdles and Javelin.

Individually on the girls side, Aja Ysac of Ulysses took the 100 and 200-Meter Dashes, while Garden City’s ThayLee Powers took the 300M Hurdles in a deep field.
