Three members of the Wellington Fire/EMS Department, along with two members of the Conway Springs Fire Department, recently deployed to southwest Kansas as part of the Sumner County Wildland Task Force to assist with ongoing wildland fire operations.

With dry conditions and strong winds creating challenging fire behavior across the region, crews from across Kansas and even neighboring states have come together to help protect lives, property, and the communities impacted by the fires.

The Sumner County Wildland Task Force is a specialized, multi-agency mutual aid team made up of local fire departments and emergency services from throughout Sumner County and the surrounding area. The task force is designed to quickly combine brush trucks, tankers, equipment, and personnel to combat large grass and wildland fires.

The task force operates under the Incident Command System, which is activated when a large-scale brush or field fire exceeds the capabilities of a single local fire department or when surrounding counties request mutual aid.

The Incident Command System is the standardized management framework used by emergency and fire services across Kansas to coordinate multi-agency responses safely and efficiently. Because a wildland task force brings together personnel and equipment from multiple jurisdictions, ICS helps organize those resources into a single, cohesive strike team. This structure ensures a clear chain of command and effective communication with the Kansas Forest Service and the State Emergency Operations Center.
