Scott City hosts Hugoton in district play
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s game at Darner Field will feature a pair of 1-3 teams, as Scott City plays host to Hugoton in Class 3A, District 8 play.
Hugoton enters 1-3 on the year, 1-0 in district play, following their 21-16 win over the Colby Eagles last Friday night at home. It was their first win of the year, in a game where they led 21-0 at the break, and hung on after a late Colby rally. They outgained the Eagles of Colby 245-214 in the game, and picked up 141 yards on the ground. This year, Hugoton 21 points per game, while allowing 23, and averaging over 200 yards of offense per contest. Isai Guardado has six rushing touchdowns and over 350 rushing yards to lead the Eagle attack.
Scott City is coming off a 37-0 loss at Ulysses last Friday, in a game that saw them snap a 10-game win streak against the Tigers. Ulysses dominated the time of possession in the first quarter in particular, as at one point they had 29 plays from scrimmage to just three for the Beavers. The Tigers led 22-0 after the opening quarter, and the 37-0 score held after halftime in a storm-shortened game that ended after the third quarter. Scott City gave up 333 yards of offense, and had just over 100 in the game. They are led this year by Drew Metzger, who has thrown for just under 400 yards and over 350 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns. Offensively, the Beavers are at around 21 points and 250 yards per game and have allowed 34 points and over 350 yards per game.
Scott City leads the series 35-11-1, and saw a 13-game win streak snapped in the final seconds a year ago at Hugoton, where the Eagles won 17-14.
