U.S. 83 construction project to temporarily close county roads south of Garden City
The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a series of short-term closures of small sections of county roads and their access to U.S. 83 south of Garden City starting Monday, Oct. 5.
The contractor will start at East Plymell Road near U.S. 83 to perform subgrade work. Once complete, work will move to Parallel Road, followed by Pete Smith Road and Annie Scheer Road. Only one road will be closed at a time and the timing of closures will depend on the contractor’s schedule. Motorists should plan and use alternate routes.
Additional short-term county road closures are expected at various times throughout the remainder of the project. KDOT will continue to provide updates on construction activities and traffic impacts as work moves forward.
The project extends from approximately 2.5 miles north of the Haskell/Finney County line to the bridge over the Arkansas River, about 12.7 miles. U.S. 83 will be realigned and reconstructed into a Super 2 highway featuring side-by-side passing lanes.
Sporer Land Development Inc. of Oakley is the contractor on the $44.5 million project. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of October 2027, weather permitting.
