We've hit a snag; please consider uploading your pages

Posted May 30, 2012

After growing steadily from May 2011 through the first quarter of 2012, the effort to upload PDFs of pages for use on the Kansas Press Association's public notice web site has stalled.

"Even though we've had excellent cooperation from well over half our KPA members, we still have about a hundred newspapers that are not uploading their PDFs so we can clip the public notices electronically," said Doug Anstaett, KPA executive director. "We've said this before and we'll say it again: a web presence is essential to help convince the Kansas Legislature that newspapers and newspaper web sites are the independent source that must continue to publish our public notices.

"This is not an idle threat; it is very real. Anything we can do to keep a step ahead of any attempt to take public notices out of newspapers and put them on a government-sponsored web site is in our best interest as an industry.

"If we are to make the case that newspapers should continue to be the primary repositories for public notices well into the future, having a viable web site to complement print that is outside the control of government is essential to its independence, reliability and trustfulness."

As of today, 139 newspapers, including most of the state's dailies, have registered and most are uploading PDFs of all their pages to an FTP site from which the public notice web site, kansaspublicnotices.com, is built.

We have listed below the newspapers that are participating in this effort. If your newspaper's name isn't on the list, it needs to be.

"We realize a number of newspapers do not produce PDFs," Anstaett said. "That's OK, because we can continue to scan those pages for public notices. However, if you're producing PDFs and sending them to a printer, then you should also be sending them to KPA's FTP site."

When you are ready to begin uploading PDFs of your pages to the KPA’s FTP site, see if you can add the new FTP site as a "second recipient" at the same time you are uploading your pages to your printer's FTP site.

If your printer's FTP site doesn't allow for a "second recipient," click here to download a short procedural description for what to do next.

Remember, we're asking you to upload your entire newspaper — not just the pages with public notices on them — so we can eventually do electronic tearsheeting, create a morgue for each individual newspaper's use and also create a source for your newspaper’s Awards of Excellence contest entries.

Please contact Gannon at rgannon@kspress.com or 785-271-5304 if you have any questions or concerns about the process or need the codes to use.
