The forecast for severe winter weather, freezing rain and bitterly cold temperatures has forced Garden City High School officials to either cancel or postpone weekend events.

The GCHS Lady Buffaloes’ basketball team was slated to travel to Wichita for a 5 p.m. Friday non-conference game with Southeast High School. The game has not been rescheduled as both school officials are attempting to find a date on the calendar to do so.

The boys’ basketball team left early Thursday for the Valley Center January Jam and was scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Olathe Northwest in the opening round. Valley Center officials have reorganized the schedule for the normal three-day tournament, and the Buffs will now play Blue Valley-West at 9 a.m. Friday. There will be no third game and the Buffs will depart Valley Center as soon as their game is completed.

The GCHS Lady Buffaloes’ wrestling team had to reschedule its original trip to Lubbock, Texas, and then was able to secure a spot in a tournament this weekend in Denver, Colo. The Lady Buffs left Thursday for the Les Mattocks Invitational at Abraham Lincoln High School, which will be contested on Saturday.

The boys’ swimming team was also set to compete on Saturday at the Wichita Heights Invitational. There is no rescheduling date at this time.

All other athletic and other activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled, according to Matt Bayer, GCHS Athletics/Activities Director.
